Singapore launched Smart Nation week to show how it intends to lead the world with integrating digital technology to enhance the everyday life of its citizens.
The third Smart Nation Innovation week will involve 20,000 people. Singaporean communities and guests from around the globe will learn about disruptive tech, study the future impacts of technology. The Singaporean community, including business, Institutes for Higher Learning (IHL), researchers, entrepreneurs and academics.
Chief Executive Officer of the Infocomm Media Development Authority, Tan Kiat Hiw said: “Innovation is key to converting digital disruption and challenges into opportunities. As we press ahead with our transformation into a digital economy, we need to involve every segment of society – from the businesses to the individual – to create a vibrant digital ecosystem that will power our future.”

Edtech highlights of the week include a ‘Tinker space’ involving coding games such as ‘Potato Pirates’ by Codomo. There is also a Hackathon which involves Singapore’s inaugural First Lego Junior League challenge, designed to introduce computational thinking concepts to 6-9 year olds.
The Singaporean government supports Edtech throughout the whole education sector. GovTech (Government Technology Agency of Singapore) announced recently training opportunities for over 300 HE students. This will involve internships and final year projects and tech-related competitions in which the IHL students will work on technological solutions for problems faced by public agencies.
Students will also been invited to seminars, workshops, and courses organised by GovTech. They will work on areas such as cyber-security, data analytics, internet-of-things and other emerging technologies. GovTech aims that this will assist these young workers to attain skills and industry relevant expertise in order to give them an edge in a technologically driven future.
